Crustaceans are a classification of organisms that date back to near the start of animal life, being one of the first complex organisms to emerge in the sea as well as some becoming terrestrial on the earth. They all have very primitive qualities.

They are however, unlike most insects and mollusks in the fact they all have gills of some sort, despite living a life often on the land, this is why you often find crustaceans such as Woodlice in damp, dark places, they do this to prevent themselves from drying out and to keep their gills damp.
