The situation in the Congo in the early 60's was a prominent example of UN attempts at peacekeeping and the related problems. It cost the UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold his life.

In the ensuing violence the country of Zaire emerged run by President Mobutu. He amassed a huge personal fortune running a corrupt and brutal regime. Since his demise and death the country once more descended into civil war. Zaire as a state has disappeared and there are now two countries bearing the name of Congo in Africa.
