The Treaty of Nanjing forced China to do:

  1. Give Hong Kong to Britain
  2. Pay a lot of money for reparations to Britain
  3. Allow anyone to trade with China
  4. Allowed those who traded with China to be subject to the law at home, not Chinese law (Extraterritorial Rights)
  5. Open up many more ports than before
