Aerobic meaning the organism needs oxygen to survive and anaerobic meaning oxygen is toxic to them, more specifically there are aerobic bacteria, obligate aerobes, anaerobes and obligate anaerobes. Aerobic means they need oxygen to survive but can survive without it for a little, obligate aerobes die right away without oxygen, anaerobes don't need oxygen to survive but can survive for a bit in an oxygen rich environment and obligate anaerobes die immediately in an oxygen-rich environment because it is toxic to them.
