In my opinion the battle of Saratoga.

Explanation:

Under the leadership of general Benedict Arnold the American forces defeated and captured an entire British army at the battle of Saratoga. The surrender of a British army was a stunning defeat for the British. If the British had won the Battle of Saratoga the Colonies would have been split in half. The English would have marched down the Hudson River to New York. This probably would have won the war for England.

The reason that this was the most important battle was that it showed that the Americans might actually be able to win the war.
This gave the French courage to enter the war on the side of the Americans. Without the support of the French the American would not have won the war.

The French provided modern weapons, money, and troops to the Americans. The key battle at Yorktown was only won with the support of French troops, cannons, and Ships. The French helped to surround the British at Yorktown. The French fleet prevented the expected British evacuation of the surrounded troops. Because of the French help another English army was forced to surrender at Yorktown, ending the revolutionary war.

The battle of Saratoga was the most important battle of the war for independence because it not only prevented the British from splitting the colonies and winning the war but also because it brought the French into the war paving the way for the final victory at Yorktown. ( note this is an opinion, arguments can be made for other battles, )
