Different systems of blood grouping is done on the basis of presence or absence of different antigens. Most commonly considered are ABO system and Rh system.

Explanation:

Generally blood grouping systems are done on the basis of antigen present on surface of red blood cells.

ABO system distinguishes 4 blood types depending of presence/absence of two types of glycoproteins on suface of RBC. There are A, B, AB and O types of blood in this system.

Rh system distinguishes 2 blood types depending on presence/absence of rhesus factor on RBC. There are Rh positive and Rh negative ( one D antigen is absent) blood types.

During blood transfusion both ABO and Rh systems are considered to determine blood type of the person as Rh negative person cannot receive Rh positive blood.

When both these systems are considered, 8 blood types could be found.

* B+ blood type means the person has antigen B and rhesus factor on RBC and could be able to receive blood from another B+ donor.*
