It gives the electrical impulse to the heart.

Explanation:

If the pacemaker was being placed in heart, it is meant to give the electrical impulse to the heart, something that has to be done by the autonomic nervous system in heart. It replaces the autonomic nervous system because the electrical impulse could be transmitted wrongly to another site and create another unwanted electrical activity that makes the heart has unsynchronized beat. The heart should have synchronized beat so the blood could be pumped effectively to the other part of the body.
