The basic function of xylem is to transport water from roots to shoots and leaves.

Explanation:

The xylem transports water and soluble mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant. It is also used to replace water lost during transpiration and photosynthesis.

The transport is passive , as the tracheary elements are dead by maturity and no longer have living content.
