During the lytic cycle the virus inserts its genetic material into the cell. The cell eventually makes multiple copies of the virus and the virus then causes the cell to lyse releasing multiple copies of the virus that may then go on to infect other cells. If the virus is not controlled more cells will die leading to the eventual death of the organism.
