In 1989, groups of students, intellectuals and labour activists occupied Tiananmen Square as a form of protest. It was against the corrupt Communist party, as well as a protest against the China's poor economy. The trigger for the protest was the death of the former Communist Party General Secretary, Hu Yaobang.
