The revolt against the Jim Crowe laws of the south.

Almost from the end of the Civil War the south had instituted laws of "separate but equal." At restaurants whites entered through the front door and blacks through the black, there were strictly black water fountains right next to strictly white water fountains. It was expected of black people that they would always ride at the rear of the bus.

Rosa Parks stated she really wasn't making a political statement when she refused to give up her seat at the front of the bus, she said she was simply too tired to move back after a long day's work. But the uproar started by her refusal took on a life of its own and the march for civil rights took off.
