Sedimentary rocks is where fossils are formed. Living things are buried under water borne sediments. This causes the preservation of the evidence of living things.
When these sedimentary layers are pushed under other segments of the crust in subduction zones the sedimentary rocks are changed into metamorphic and igneous rocks and the fossils are destroyed.
The only formations that are rich in fossils are sedimentary layers of rock.
