As far as I am aware none of the native american tribes had writing systems prior to European intervention (translating bibles etc). The tribes used verbal stories in order to pass along history and important facts and morals. They communicated verbally and/or using their own individual sign language. If you go south I think the Mayans had a written language but that may have been after contact with the Spanish, I am not sure?
