The battle of Tours also called the battle of Poitiers was a battle fought between French and Burgundian troops under Charles Martel and an army under the Umayyad Caliphate under Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi. It was fought between the cities of Tour and Poitiers. The French were the victors in this battle (notably without the use of any cavalry) and Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi was promptly killed afterwards. Thus extending french authority into the south.
Afterwards, other Christians began calling Charles Martel "the hammer" and he was subsequently praised as the champion of Christianity for his pushback against the Muslims. (it's important to note that the Umayyad Caliphate owned all of Spain, North Africa and the middle east by this point.)
The victory of Charles is widely believed to have saved the Christian kingdoms from Muslim rule.
