There were a number of students killed and injured.

Explanation:

Students were protesting at the US invasion of Cambodia which seemed to contradict Nixon and Kissinger's assertions that they were committed to an American withdrawal.

The National Guard opened fire killing 4 students and wounding several others. The imagery of the shootings and the impassioned speech by one of the victim's fathers at her funeral gave considerable weight to the growing opposition to continued American involvement in Vietnam.
