In Germany happened Kristallnacht or Crystal Night when bands of "citizens" and paramilatary nazi groups unleashed vicious attacks against Jews and their establishments (houses, shops, synagogues).

Explanation:

Kristallnacht was allegedly instigated by the assassination of the German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by a Polish Jew.
A lot of "rightfully enraged" citizens and gangs of violent paramilitary hooligans systematically attacked the Jews while the authorities and the police looked the other way without intervening.

The destruction of the glasses of Jewish shops and synagogues and, in general, of windows sparkled the tragically ironical name given to the event.

Kristallnacht was probably the first big and organized step in the practical enforcing of the policy of persecution and elimination of the Jews in Germany under the Nazi regime.
