After the end of WWII, the Cold War quickly started and Europe became divided in two parts by what Churchill called the "Iron Curtain". Western Europe was henceforth dominated by the USA whereas Eastern Europe became subordinate to the USSR. Greece was the only exception due to a deal between Stalin and Churchill which was made in Yalta.
