What happens to the pupil in both bright an dim light?

In bright light, the pupils will contract.

In dim light, the pupils will dilate.

Functionally, there is less "light" when it is dim, so the eye wants to let more data in to get a better picture.

If the pupils didn't contract in bright light, lots of the photopigment in your eyes would be bleached and you couldn't have a well-contrasted picture of the world around you.
