The development of the freeways and ownership of cars.

Explanation:

With the development of paved roads and improved cars people could live outside of the city and commute into the city for work.

Those who could afford to buy cars and homes moved out of the cities to the suburbs. The suburbs offered bigger homes, large yards and clean air. Leaving the crowded cities, with the dirty air, small apartments, and kids playing on the streets, had a great appeal.

Before the 1950s people who worked in the cities had to live in the cities. Changes in transportation made it possible for people to live outside of the cities and still find work.
