What hormones does the heart secrete?
Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP)
The ANP is secreted from the atrial walls when they become stretched. During heart failure, the atrial walls become very much stretched and release large amount of ANP; much higher than the normal level. In case of severe heart failure, the circulating level of ANP in the blood may increase tenfold.
The ANP increases sodium excretion by kidneys, and reduces blood pressure.
