# What ions are present in solutions of sodium hydroxide?

Sodium Hydroxide NaOH, is comprised of a positive sodium cation $N {a}^{+}$ and a polyatomic hydroxide anion $O {H}^{-}$.
In solution hydroxide $O {H}^{-}$ is is typically insoluble but with a group IA alkali metal like sodium $N {a}^{+}$ the ions will dissociate in solution.
