An equation of a line that tries to correlate data, usually for predictive purposes.

Explanation:

Linear = a straight line. For ease of analysis, many other curve shapes may be mathematically 'adjusted' to make them linear.
Regression = Internal comparison of variance. The accuracy or 'fit' of the linear equation is determined by the amount of variation each data point has from the corresponding point and the derived equation.
Equation = A mathematical way to represent the relationship between data values.
