A relict sediment is an area of ancient sediment which remains unburied despite changes in the surrounding environment.

Explanation:

Relict sediments are inherited from previous phases of sedimentation and are therefore not necessarily in equilibrium with the present environment in which they occur.

Approximately 50% of the present continental shelves are covered by relict sediments deposited in the lower sea levels during the period of the Pleistocene era.
