When two stars orbit each other and both comes in our line of sight brightness variations take palace due to one eclipsing other.

Explanation:

One star goes in front and back of other making changes in brightness..From distance we see only one star so suspect it to be a variable.But the variations are due to eclipsing effect.enter image source here
