The attraction between oppositely charged ions

Explanation:

A common misconception is that ionic compounds form discrete units (ie. molecules) - rather ionic compounds consist of a repeating pattern of oppositely charged ions that arrange themselves in such a way that attraction is maximized (as many opposite charged particles adjacent as can effectively pack) and repulsion is minimized (like charges are as far away as possible from one another in the pattern)

Ionic Bonding - True or False?

Another common misconception is that the exchange of electrons is an ionic bond, this is not true, but rather once electrons are exchanged (during a chemical reaction) and ions are produced, it is the attraction between opposite charged ions that constitutes an ionic bond.
