What is embryogenesis in humans?

Human embryogenesis is the process of cell division and cellular differentiation of the embryo that occurs during the early stages of development.


Embryogenesis covers the first eight weeks of development. Human embryology is the study of this development.

Embryogenesis starts with the fertilisation of the egg cell and a sperm cell. Fertilisation results in the formation of a single celled zygote. The germinal stage takes around ten days. The zygote begins to divide in a process called cleavage. A blastocyte is then formed and implants in the uterus.

Embryogenesis continues with the next stage i.e. gastrulation, where the three germ layers of the embryo form in a process called as histogenesis. This is followed by the process of neurulation and organogenesis.

The entire process involves coordinated spatial and temporal changes in gene expression, cell growth and cellular differentiation.
