Gray matter is a term for tissue mass present in central nervous system. There are neuron cell bodies, glial cells, synapses in gray matter.

Explanation:

Central nervous system has two major anatomical parts: brain and spinal cord. In brain, the gray matter is more superficially located while in spinal cord, gray matter is centrally located.

Gray matter is markedly distinguished from white matter, another tissue mass present in central nervous system.

As all the neoron cell bodies are present in gray matter, it is involved in all important brain functions.

White matter is mainly bunches of myelinated axons, nerve tracts, etc.
