#"Gum benzoin"# or #"gum benjamin"# is an essential oil obtained from the bark of some trees...

Explanation:

...and is a very common component in perfumes, incense, and flavourings... Perhaps someone better informed than I am will be able to outline its role in masking the smell of ethyl alcohol.... As it sometimes occurs in chewing gum, perhaps you chew the gum and it may conceal whether you have been smoking or drinking.

And as to the people who do chew gum, would it not be better to start smoking again, and thus reduce the occurrence of discarded chewing gum all over the #£^%ing pavements? Of course, you would die early, but this would be a small price to pay.
