It is made up of two main layers, the outer fibrous layer (annulus fibrosus) which provides structural integrity, and the inner gel like layer (nucleus pulposus) which acts as a cushion during day to day activities. The outer 1/3 of the annulus fibrosus is sensate and when the structure is damaged, causes pain (commonly in the low back area). When the annulus fibrosus ruptures, the nucleus may escape into the spinal canal, irritating the spinal cord, causing pain as well.
