Muscular dystrophy is a disorder that causes weakening, loss of mass and breakdown of skeletal muscles over a period of time.

Explanation:

This occurs due to a mutation in genes that are responsible for the synthesis of muscle proteins. The cause could be either due to inheriting the defect or occurrence of mutation during early development. This disorder may be X-linked recessive, autosomal recessive or autosomal dominant.

There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. Physical therapy, braces, and corrective surgery may help with some symptoms. In some cases, a person with muscular dystrophy will get progressively weaker to the extent that it shortens life span due to heart and breathing complications.

There are 9 main categories of muscular dystrophy, that contain more than 30 specific types.
