What is osmosis? How does it helps in our daily life?

1 Answer

Osmosis is the movement of water into or out of cells.

Explanation:

One important characteristic of all living things is that they maintain homeostasis . This means that living organisms maintain a stable internal environment which allows them to carry on their business (life processes).

One important factor that living things must keep balanced is the amount of water inside of cells. Sometimes cells need to bring water in if they don't have enough. Other times cells may lose water because of conditions outside of the cell.

Without osmosis your cells would not be able to have the proper levels of water to work at their best. This might lead to something annoying like the muscle cramps a dehydrated athlete might experience. Or could possibly lead to a very dangerous condition called hyponatremia , which can cause cells to take in too much water diluting important electrolytes like sodium.
