Shaft mining is a form of underground mining where shafts are vertically inserted to extract minerals.

This type of mining is very dangerous and is best for concentrated ores like iron.
The shaft consists of many compartments to ensure ventilation. The largest compartment is usually where the workers and equipment enter and exit the mine. Another compartment contains an emergency exit. A third contains an elevator through which the extracted ores and minerals can be lifted to the surface.
