Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is caused by abnormally folded, infectious protein called PRION .

Explanation:

BSE is also known as mad cow disease. The infective agent probably gets transmitted through brain tissue of afflicted organism's carcass. Incubation period is very long, and the disease is not treatable as of now.
