The coefficient of friction is defined as the ratio of the frictional force on an object divided by the normal force of an object.
It is commonly used to find out how large the frictional resistive force is of an object given the normal force and the coefficient.
Qualitatively, though, the coefficient of friction is the measurement of "stickiness" between two objects. Ice skates and ice have a very low coefficient of friction while sandpaper and wood have a very high coefficient of friction.
