A hypothesis is a statement which is not yet proven, so we do not know if it is right or wrong.

A hypothesis becomes a theory if someone proves it, however scientists usually approve theories only if they are prooven more than once because sometimes proofs appear to have mistakes. Some of the mistakes can even be found a long time after the proof is published.
