Gerund is a form of verb used as a noun, participle is form of verb used as an adjective or as a verb in conjunction with an auxiliary verb.
Explanation:
An important tip to differentiate between them for me is participles can be removed from the sentence and the sentence would still make sense, but the same thing does not apply to gerunds.
Example of Gerund:
Playing a new instrument is fun.
Example of Participle:
Playing a new instrument, he hoped to impress everyone around him.
