Federalists favored a strong federal government

The oposition between the Federalists and the Anti-federalists is based on the role that the Federal Government should play.
Anti-federalists favored states' rights, the Democratic Republican Party and Jefferson defended that position.

Washington and his secretary of the treasury Alexander Hamilton defended the opposite position. Central banking was one of the major issues on which this opposition could be seen.

John Marshall, the second Chief Supreme Court Justice(1801-1835) was also federalist and defended the Cherokees against the State of Georgia in 1832 for instance.
