# What is the direct vaporization of a solid without passing through its liquid state called?

$\text{Sublimation}$
When a material sublimes, it undergoes the transition from the solid state directly to the gaseous state. A common material that sublimes at normal pressures is $\text{dry ice}$, i.e. $C {O}_{2} \left(g\right)$. In my very young days, I can remember ice cream sellers using blocks of dry ice to cool their ice creams; of course when the dry ice turned to gas it would not soak their stock.
