# What is the equation in point-slope form of the line passing through (2, 5) and (–1, 8)?

Mar 30, 2015

The answer is: $y = - x + 7$.

Using the formula that gives the equation of a line, given two points $A$ and $B$:

$\frac{y - {y}_{A}}{{y}_{B} - {y}_{A}} = \frac{x - {x}_{A}}{{x}_{B} - {x}_{A}}$,

so:

$\frac{y - 5}{8 - 5} = \frac{x - 2}{- 1 - 2} \Rightarrow \frac{y - 5}{3} = \frac{x - 2}{-} 3 \Rightarrow y - 5 = - x + 2 \Rightarrow$

$y = - x + 7$.
