# What is the formula for finding an outlier?

Sep 19, 2017

Look below :)

#### Explanation:

You first determine the value of ${Q}_{1}$ and ${Q}_{3}$.

Once you have found these values you subtract:

${Q}_{3} - {Q}_{1}$

This is called the interquartile range.

Now you multiply your result by $1.5$

$\left({Q}_{3} - {Q}_{1}\right) \times 1.5 = R$

$R = \text{your result}$

Then you add your result $\left(R\right)$ to ${Q}_{3}$

$R + {Q}_{3}$

And subtract ${Q}_{1} - R$

You will have two numbers this will be a range. Any number located outside this range is consider an outlier.
