What is the importance of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?

Bacteria play a vital role in Nitrogen cycle. They help fix the atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates. Plants cannot utilize nitrogen in its elemental form hence bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates and make it available for plants for their metabolic activities. Ex: Rhizobium Bacteria
