These meninges surround and support the brain, and protect it from shock.

The outermost layer is the dura mater which is thick and tough.

The middle layer is the arachnoid mater because of spider-like processes called arachnoid trabiculae that extend from it to the third layer.

The innermost layer is the pia mater, a thin delicate layer of cells which closely adheres to the brain.
