The United States buying the Louisiana Territory from France.

Explanation:

In April 1803, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. Prior to the purchase, Thomas Jefferson, then the president, had told his ambassadors to try and buy New Orleans and Florida from France.

As a major surprise to the ambassadors, Napoleon Bonaparte offered them roughly 828,000 square miles for $15 million (less than 3 cents an acre!). France was on the brink of war with Great Britain, and the French government was in severe debt, so Napoleon wanted the money more than the land.
This purchase nearly doubled the land of the United States, and included parts of 14 states.
