If you order all cases by value, the median is the value of the middle case.
Explanation:
If there is an even number of cases, there will be two "middle values". Then the median is defined as the mean between those values.
In other words: In a dataset half the cases will have a lower (or equal) value than the median (and half will be equal or higher).
