The Mexican American War occurred during James Polk's presidency. 16 soldiers had been killed near the Rio Grande and it served as a pretext to start the conflict. It resulted in the annexation of the entire SouthWest( California, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, most of Colorado, parts of Oregon, etc) for a financial compensation of only 15 millions dollars.

The principle of Manifest Destiny was coined after this conflict by journalist O'Sullivan and was based on the idea that the USA had a divine mission to spread democracy westward. The addition of all those territories is what made the conquest of the West possible, Mormons migrated to Utah in the years 1850s for instance;
