continental drift.

Explanation:

It literally means that the two continents (Africa and South America) where one continent (one very big piece of land) but they where "broken" by tectonic movement (ie. earth shaking movements that leads to phenomena like earthquakes) then they Where drifted apart (moved in opposite directions).
