What is the process that changes the way in which atoms are arranged by causing bonds betwee to break and new bonds to form between different atoms?

This process is called a chemical reaction.


The image below shows what happens during the combustion of methane, #"CH"_4"#.

The bonds between the four hydrogen atoms and the carbon atom in the methane molecule break, and the bonds between the oxygen atoms in the oxygen molecules break forming new bonds between carbon and oxygen, to make carbon dioxide, and the hydrogen and oxygen atoms form new bonds, making water molecules.

The chemical equation is #"CH"_4"+2O"_2"##rarr##"CO"_2"+2H"_2"O"#.
