A prologue is an introductory ("pro...") passage that establishes the setting for the the actual record of events ("...log") of the rest of the book.

Explanation:

Often a prologue (especially in works of fiction) occurs at a point in time significantly prior to the main events of the story and provides clues as to how the setting of the story came about.
