The Louisiana Purchase completed in 1803 turned over the the rights and oversight of the lands from Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and north to the Canadian border. This agreement brokered with France during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson added over 828,000,000squares miles to the nation of the United States land mass. This territory would eventually become the parts of 15 new states.
Jefferson requested The Discovery Corps to explore this territory leading to the expeditions conducted by Merriweather Lewis and William Clark.
