Explanation:

During the war Russia's army was constantly on the retreat from La Grand Armee. They burned out houses, villages, and towns as the French moved towards them. When the forces actually met, France's army was tired, cold, and nearly starved. Even though they won all their engagements, France took more casualties than Russia in the battles.
